Educated at Manchester Grammar School and the Queen's College, Oxford, where I read Greats. I completed a doctorate on administration in Roman Egypt at the University of Toronto. I was then Assistant Professor of Classics at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (1970-72) and Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Manchester (1972-7), Lecturer in Ancient History and Official Student (tutorial fellow) of Christ Church, before becoming Camden Professor of Ancient History.

My research has focussed mainly on documentary papyrology, the history of Egypt under Ptolemaic and Roman rule and (since 1975) the Latin writing tablets from the fort of Vindolanda on the pre-Hadrianic frontier of Roman Britain.

Read Classics at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (1977-80). I have an M.A. in Classics from the University of Cincinnati (1984) and a Doctorate in Ancient History from King's College London (1990). I have taught at King's College London and the Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations in Changchun, P.R. China.

I have been working in Oxford since 1994 and have been at the CSAD since its establishment. My research interests are in Greek history and epigraphy, in particular the history of institutions.

Administrator for the Mellon Programme, half-time, whilst concurrently pursuing a part-time MSc in Historic Building Conservation. My previous degrees include a BA in Art History/Anthropology and an MA in Anthropology - both of these degrees concentrating specifically on Ethnography/Museum Studies, focussing on prehistoric ceramics from the South-western United States.

Prior to joining the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents, I have been working as an archaeological illustrator and ceramic conservator.

I read Greek and Archaeology/Ancient History at the University of Bristol.  On graduation I worked for a time as a middle manager in the logistics function of British Steel before moving to Balliol College, Oxford. I completed a D.Phil. thesis on "Obeloi and Iron in Archaic Greece" under the supervision of Robin Osborne and Chris Salter after which I joined the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents.

Current research interests include the development of iron in "Iron Age" Greece and the development of the Greek alphabet.
