Epigraphic Sources for Early Greek Writing

1. Introduction

When L.H. Jeffery (known universally as "Anne") died on 29th September 1986 she bequeathed an archive of papers and photographs to the Faculty of Literae Humaniores at Oxford University. The archive contains the notes that she assembled in the course of writing the major book for which she is best known, The Local Scripts of Archaic Greece, together with material for a projected second edition (subsequently completed by Alan Johnston). The archive also contains an extensive collection of black and white photographs taken by LHJ throughout her adult life.

The material in the archive constitutes a precious resource for the study of the development of the Greek alphabet. As part of a programme of research and digitisation entitled "Script, Image and the Culture of Writing in the Ancient World", funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we will be cataloguing and digitising the papers, drawings and photographs in the Jeffery archive over the course of the next three years (2001-2004). Our aim is to create an electronic resource for the study of early Greek writing to complement and enrich use of the book publication of The Local Scripts of Archaic Greece.
