Script, Image and the Culture of Writing in the Ancient World

Epigraphic Sources for Early Greek Writing

2.1 The Paper Archive

The paper archive comprises 98 folders, 75 of which relate to Local Scripts of Archaic Greece (LSAG). Each LSAG folder contains numerous pages of notes, the majority of which fall into three main categories.

By far the largest category comprises notes on inscriptions, of which the following is a typical example:

Characteristic features illustrated by this page include the brief notes, bibliographic references and drawings (it is often difficult to tell whether the latter constitute original or copied work). Also, LHJ has placed material relating to more than one document on the same page, a feature which complicates the organisation and cataloguing of the papers. A significant number of the pages of notes concern inscriptions which are not included in LSAG.
